This week marks 30 years since Falklands Conservation purchased Middle Island, 📅 made possible by Steve Spring and the World Parks Endowment in 1994.🌍 Covering 150 hectares, this rodent-free 🐀🚫island is a biodiversity hotspot and home to 33 breeding bird species, including all 3 Falklands endemics like Cobb’s Wren. 🐥🦆 It also hosts 84 plant species, including the endangered Falkland Rock-cress.🌼
Despite past impacts, the ongoing restoration project (supported by @georgiaseafoods, BFSAI Conservation Society and dedicated volunteers over the last five years) has seen 12.4 hectares planted with native vegetation, and this year, notable successes include self-seeding tussac 🌱and Striated Caracaras breeding. 🦅Middle Island remains a vital conservation site for the Falklands’ unique wildlife. 🌸🐦🐧
